The scientific study of gum disease and its treatment is called Periodontology and as such a periodontist is a dentist who has undergone additional training to be recognised by his peers as a specialist in the field of gum disease aka Periodontology. Dr Ahmed is  registered with the General Dental Council as a periodontal specialist having been awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training from Guys’ Kings’ and St Thomas’ London. During the 4 years specialist training programme Dr Ahmed received extensive training in advanced restorative techniques to include implant dentistry and grafting procedures.

The gum tissues around your teeth are unique in that they allow your teeth to be attached to the bone deep inside your body whilst being suspended essentially outside your body. If the gums are not cared for correctly they can become diseased and infected. This disease has been described as pyorrhoea and periodontitis. Periodontitis is essentially the result of conflict between oral bacteria and your immune system.

Gum disease in largely a pain free disease, other signs of the disease are bleeding gums, bad breath, receding gums leading to tooth loss if left untreated.

A periodontist will help you understand the disease process as well as the treatment required to resolve the bleeding and bone destruction. If a loose tooth cannot be saved a periodontist would assess the suitability of using dental implants to avoid the use of dentures and false teeth. Dental implants are a tried and tested method of replacing teeth using your bone for anchorage. It is without doubt that dental implants are aesthetically more pleasing to the eye and psyche of patients than dentures.

Uncontrolled and untreated gum disease is soon to become a thing of the past due to public awareness of permanent bone loss and other irreversible side effects that come in the wake of gum disease.

Regular visits to a periodontist can forestall these issues. Gum disease, bleeding gums and tooth loss can all be prevented with the correct level of care providing the diagnosis is made at the early stages of bone loss. Advanced restorative procedure to include dental implants should only be considered once the gum disease has been resolved; otherwise the gum disease can spread to your implants.
